The Royal Society, a renowned scientific body, proposes reducing the sunlight reaching Earth as a potential solution. This approach, they say, could lessen the impact of climate change. But here's where it gets controversial: the society highlights the potential dangers of individual nations taking matters into their own hands.

Professor Keith Shine, who chaired the report's working group, acknowledges the risks. He suggests that solar radiation modification (SRM) might become a necessary evil if global efforts to reduce emissions fail to keep temperatures below the critical 1.5C threshold.

The report ranks stratospheric aerosol injection as the most viable option. This method involves planes releasing sulphur dioxide gas at high altitudes, creating reflective particles that dim sunlight. Real-world evidence supports this idea, as the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption temporarily cooled the planet.

Computer models suggest that releasing a certain amount of sulphur dioxide annually could reduce global temperatures by 1C. The estimated cost, while significant, is far less than the economic losses from extreme weather events.

But this is the part most people miss: SRM is not a permanent fix. It doesn't address the root cause of climate change, and it's not an alternative to reducing emissions. It's a temporary measure that could buy us time while we work on long-term solutions.
