Israel claims to have deported 137 activists, citizens of 14 different countries, after their flotilla was intercepted. The flotilla's journey began in Spain, with additional boats joining from Tunisia and other ports. As the boats neared Gaza, protests in support of the activists and against the war in Gaza intensified worldwide.
On Wednesday, the first boats were stopped in international waters, approximately 70 nautical miles from Gaza. Israel claims jurisdiction over this area, despite it being outside their territorial waters.
Grainy footage from the boats shows them sailing towards Gaza, with Israel's navy ordering them to change course, citing an active combat zone and a lawful naval blockade.
The Israeli foreign ministry has been active on social media, posting updates on the deportations. They state that the activists are being sent to Turkey and that all detainees are in good health. However, the GSF alleges that many activists faced assault during the interception, a claim the Israeli government has not addressed.
The presence of Swedish activist Greta Thunberg on one of the boats has also been noted, though her status and involvement remain unclear.
In a statement, the GSF emphasized the illegal nature of Israel's actions, stating that all 42 of their vessels were intercepted over 38 hours. They called on governments and international institutions to demand the immediate safety and release of the activists.
