Jerry Jones Fined $250K for Obscene Gesture at Jets Game | NFL Owner Controversy Explained (2025)

Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has been slapped with a $250,000 fine by the NFL for making an obscene hand gesture toward fans at MetLife Stadium — but here’s where it gets controversial: Jones insists the gesture was completely unintentional and meant as a positive signal to Cowboys fans, not an insult directed at New York Jets supporters.

The incident occurred late in Dallas’s 37-22 win on Sunday, when emotions were running high. Jones explained on his radio show that he aimed to flash a "thumbs up" to celebrate with the Cowboys faithful. However, a viral video shows him grinning widely before briefly displaying what the league deemed an inappropriate gesture.

"It was an unfortunate mix-up," Jones told 105.3 The Fan. "I was interacting with a large group of Cowboys fans right in front of me — definitely not Jets fans. The stadium was buzzing with excitement for the Cowboys, especially as we closed in on the win."

The gesture came right after quarterback Dak Prescott threw his fourth touchdown pass, pushing Dallas to a 37-14 lead with just over four minutes left in the game. Jones emphasized that the controversial hand sign was accidental: "I was just caught up in the moment, celebrating our last touchdown. There was no antagonism or anything negative intended. I simply made the wrong sign with my hand. It was a genuine mistake. You could say it was accidental, and we corrected it quickly once I realized. My real intention was to give a thumbs up and acknowledge the excitement from our fans who were jumping and cheering."

This isn’t the first time a team owner faced a hefty fine for inappropriate conduct. Late in the 2023 season, Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at Jacksonville fans. Back in 2009, the late Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was fined $250,000 for making obscene gestures during a celebration against Buffalo.

Interestingly, the NFL clarified that Tepper’s fine came late in the 2023 season, not in 2024 as was initially reported.

So, what do you think? Was Jerry Jones’s gesture truly accidental and just a moment caught out of context, or should owners maintain stricter decorum no matter the situation? Could this fine be a sign the NFL is cracking down more firmly on owners’ conduct in public? Sound off with your thoughts — do you agree with the fine or think it’s too harsh? This is the part most people miss: how much responsibility should team owners really bear for their actions when tensions run high at games?
