O'Neill's Future in Baltimore: A Second Chance
BALTIMORE -- Tyler O'Neill's journey with the Orioles is set to continue, as he opts in for the next two years, according to a source. This decision comes after a challenging 2025 season, marked by injuries and underperformance.
The 30-year-old outfielder signed a three-year, $49.5 million contract with the Orioles last December, a significant investment for the team. However, O'Neill's contract included an opt-out clause, allowing him to re-enter free agency after the first season. Despite the setbacks, O'Neill's talent and potential remain a focus for the Orioles.
In 2025, O'Neill battled injuries, missing significant time due to neck inflammation, a left shoulder impingement, and right wrist inflammation. This limited him to just 54 games, where he struggled with a .199 batting average, six doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 26 RBIs, and a .684 OPS.
Yet, the Orioles believe O'Neill can turn things around. They point to his previous strong performance with the Red Sox in 2024, where he hit 31 home runs and posted an .847 OPS over 113 games. The team's general manager, Mike Elias, expressed confidence in O'Neill's abilities during the end-of-season press conference, stating that his talent is evident and that he has the power and swing to succeed.
Another player returning to the Orioles' lineup is left-hander Dietrich Enns, who signed a one-year contract with a 2027 team option. Enns, traded to the Orioles from the Tigers, had a solid debut with the team, posting a 3.14 ERA in 17 games (one start). The Orioles chose to keep him for the following year, recognizing his potential as a bullpen competitor.
However, not all players are returning. Utility man Jorge Mateo, who has been limited by injuries and struggled offensively, may not be back. The Orioles are reportedly planning to decline Mateo's $5.5 million team option for the 2026 season, making him a free agent. This decision reflects the team's focus on players with proven track records and high potential.
As O'Neill and Enns return, the Orioles aim to build a strong foundation for the future, learning from the past and focusing on players who can contribute to the team's success.
